Bassett Healthcare Selected as HIMSS/ASQ 'Story of Success' for Use of Perioperative Solution from Surgical Information Systems

February 11, 2010

ATLANTA – Surgical Information Systems (SIS) announced today that long time client Bassett Healthcare Network of Cooperstown, NY has won Tier 1 status in the HIMSS/ASQ sponsored “Stories of Success” program.  One of only six case studies recognized in the top tier, Bassett’s submission was selected for demonstrating improvements in healthcare quality and patient safety through use of the SIS perioperative suite of software solutions.

The selection of submissions was conducted by a Peer Review Body. Members of the HIMSS Patient Safety & Quality Outcomes Committee and additional subject matter experts from organizations such as The Joint Commission (TJC), , the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), and the American Society for Quality (ASQ), provided support to the review process.

The Bassett case study provided examples of proven outcomes within 3 months following go-live of the SIS perioperative solution:

  • On-time first surgical case starts increased by 35%
  • OR suite turnaround times improved from 45 minutes to 25-30 minutes (44%-33% improvement)
  • Case supply costs decreased by $200 per case
  • Surgery-related supply charge capture rates increased by 30%
  • Improved staff satisfaction from both surgeons and perioperative staff

“We are gratified to have been recognized by HIMSS and ASQ,” said Kathy Brooks, Bassett’s Administrative Director of Anesthesia & Surgical Support Services.  “Our partnership with SIS has provided us with the adaptable technology we’ve needed to increase clinical, financial and operational efficiencies in our perioperative department… and powerful reporting tools to show compliance with Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements.”

The awards highlight the fulfillment of the national priorities established by the National Priorities Partnership (NPP) and the Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety goals (NPSG).  The case study can be viewed on the HIMSS website at http://www.himss.org/storiesofsuccess

According to Ed Daihl, CEO of Surgical Information Systems, “We are pleased to congratulate our client, Bassett Healthcare Network on their selection as one of a select few national finalists in this important competition.  Through their creative use of our perioperative solutions, Bassett has clearly documented how healthcare IT can measurably improve healthcare quality and patient safety”.
