Discover how Northern Virginia Heart and Vascular Center enhanced operations and profitability by implementing SIS Complete, achieving a paperless environment and streamlined revenue cycle management.

SCHEDULE A DEMO

A new cardiovascular center faced the critical task of selecting an ASC management platform that could support its operations without overwhelming staff and physicians with technical hurdles. By partnering with Surgical Information Systems (SIS), the facility achieved a fully paperless environment, streamlined its revenue cycle management (RCM), and unlocked real-time financial insights, allowing it to establish a strong foundation for future growth.

Situation

Northern Virginia Heart and Vascular Center (NVHVC) opened in July 2025 as a cardiovascular facility focused on catheterization, electrophysiology (EP), and peripheral procedures.

NVHVC operates as a joint venture between a hospital network and private physician groups, with a team of 16 physicians. They forecast scaling up to perform 1,200 cases per year. To support this growth, the NVHVC administrative team determined it needed a comprehensive ASC management and clinical documentation platform. The goals were clear: establish a paperless operation, ensure seamless communication between clinical and business office teams, and gain deep visibility into case costs and physician performance.

Solution

When evaluating technology partners, NVHVC Administrator Jessica Mountjoy, MBA, BSN, RN, NEA-BC, led the search for an ASC management system that could meet the needs of all stakeholders across the center:

  • An easy-to-use solution that could be configured to physician workflows and provide them with access to their schedule, operative notes, and other essential information from any device
  • Robust reporting capabilities that did not require extensive back-end coding and setup, as Mountjoy had experienced with other management systems
  • A system that would facilitate communication between the business office, clinical team, and physicians' offices and would allow NVHVC to be paperless, from scheduling to clinical documentation
We looked at multiple solutions and asked other centers what they were using. SIS Complete was the most recommended system hands down."

The center chose SIS Complete™ as its EHR because it delivered an all-in-one, cloud-based platform that aligned with their operational goals. The system's high configurability allowed NVHVC to tailor workflows to match physician preferences while also allowing the center to meet the clinical documentation requirements of complex cardiovascular procedures. Instead of struggling with disparate systems and coding requirements, the staff could rely on built-in, customizable reporting to track key performance indicators (KPIs). Lastly, SIS Complete supported Mountjoy’s initiative for the center to be paperless, avoiding the reliance on cumbersome, costly paper processes.

A key selling point of partnering with SIS was the company's unique combination of software and Revenue Cycle Services (RCS). Given the center's lean billing staff and the challenge associated with cardiology reimbursement, outsourcing the center's revenue cycle to SIS RCS and its ASC-focused, CPC-certified RCM professionals helped minimize denials and delays while increasing collections.

Results

Since partnering with SIS, NVHVC has experienced benefits across its clinical, operational, and financial workflows.

Streamlined Clinical and Operational Efficiency

A critical measure of any EHR's success is physician adoption. SIS Complete's intuitive design translated to immediate clinical success. "It only took 20 minutes to train our clinical users when we went live," recalls Mountjoy. "Now, it takes five minutes to teach new physicians how to use SIS Complete. They love SIS.”

This ease of use has impacted compliance. By using the visual safeguards and checkmarks built into SIS Complete, the center consistently achieves 100% chart completion by the end of each day. In addition, the SIS Exchange™ patient portal has streamlined the patient intake process, allowing nurses to review online questionnaires ahead of each patient's arrival. This proactive approach has improved patient safety, such as catching critical allergy information well in advance of a scheduled procedure.

Optimized Financial Performance

NVHVC has established KPIs against which it measures performance in the clinical (chart completion, case arrival, case duration) and financial areas (cost per case, percentage of denials). SIS Complete provides powerful reporting tools that dive deep into cost-per-case metrics and physician efficiency.

With the integrated ENVI inventory management system, NVHVC has achieved true case costing. SIS Complete calculates staff timing and supply usage, allowing Mountjoy to generate precise reports for each physician and each case. This data allows the center to compare expenses across physicians, identify cost-reduction opportunities, and standardize supply usage.

"We have a culture of learning and continuous improvement here,” says Mountjoy. “I want everyone to feel empowered to bring new ideas to enhance efficiency and save costs. And as part-owners, the physicians want to know how the center can perform better. Being able to run the reports in SIS Complete and show them the data has helped us figure out ways to improve together.”

Additionally, partnering with the SIS RCS team provided the facility with ASC-specific billing expertise from day one. Weekly calls between NVHVC and the RCS team ensure seamless communication, helping the center understand revenue cycle performance, quickly catch out-of-network issues, and reduce claim denials. Having a single platform for clinical documentation and RCM ensures that schedulers, nurses, and billing staff are always aligned.

As part-owners, the physicians want to know how the center can perform better. Being able to run the reports in SIS Complete and show them the data has helped us figure out ways to improve together.”

Superior Support and Partnership

NVHVC has consistently praised the responsive SIS support team. Whether receiving a response to a support ticket or jumping on a video call to walk through a workflow, the center receives timely, expert assistance that keeps its operations running smoothly. “SIS Support is incredibly responsive. They have been a great resource for our team,” says Mountjoy.

Conclusion

By implementing SIS Complete, NVHVC successfully launched a highly efficient, paperless facility equipped for rapid growth. The system's comprehensive nature eliminated the need for complex reporting workarounds, providing leadership with immediate, transparent insights into clinical compliance and financial performance.

With an interface that physicians enjoy using, integrated inventory tracking for accurate case costing, and expert RCM support, this cardiovascular ASC has optimized every aspect of its operations. Through a strategic partnership with SIS, the ASC is empowered to deliver exceptional patient care while strengthening its financial health.

Between the capabilities of SIS Complete and expertise of the RCS team, SIS is a true one-stop shop for our center."
